Official day of the city – 1 August (birthday of the city). The annual Sea Festival takes place in the end of July, moreover, Klaipėda’s name is proclaimed by the annual international Castle Jazz Festival.
Danė river flows through Klaipėda and mouths the sea.
Klaipeda is situated 311 km to the Northwest from the capital city.
The old name of Klaipėda - Memel- is of hydronimic origin. It is believed, that the local Baltic Tribes (Svalvian and maybe Curonian) called the flow of Nemunas in the lower reaches in this way and the German Order took this name. The Castle and the town were given the same name because it was believed that the isthmus beside Danė river is the gape of Nemunas.
